Why?

The Most Important Question To Understanding Anything Deeper

One of the easiest, yet most powerful sentences in the human language is just one word: Why? It’s an interrogative sentence. It usually comes after receiving knowledge for the first time. You want to know more!

It’s a mother looking at her 7 year old with a baseball in hand after shattering a window. Why did you do this?

It’s a teacher trying to help a student lean into a correct answer that they gave and peel its layers back to discover more. Why do you think that?

It’s anyone that wants to find more fulfillment in the work that they’re doing. Why am I doing the things that I do?

Why holds power. It shows curiosity, honesty, and determination. When we’re curious about why something is the way that it is- we can innovate. We can come up with better solutions. All of that stems from just asking the question “Why?”. Sometimes you won’t like the answers that “Why?” gives. Why do bad things happen? Why did I fail at this? Why am I stuck in a rut right now? It’s when we lean into that question that we are able to discover what we are called to do. This then can encourage determination in us. When we know why things are the way that they are, we can then take action. You can change things that need to be changed. You can go a different direction. You can take ownership of something!

So start with the question- why? Why do you do the things that you do? If you’re not feeling fulfilled in what you’re doing, why are you not? Always ask why, but don’t be afraid of the answer that lies on the other side.
