"It Is Well" (Part 4)

When Our Faith Becomes Sight

My all-time favorite hymn is “It Is Well With My Soul”. Composed by Horatio Spafford and published in 1876, it holds some profound truth that I delight in. Its origin comes from a heartbreaking tragedy in Spafford’s life - the loss of his four daughters in a shipwreck. Spafford found refuge in his faith through this song which covers themes resonating with loss, temptation, hope, faith, and acceptance. Over the next few days, I’m going to be breaking down each of the verses and their implications in our lives as Christians. Last time I broke down the third verse.

Let’s break down one final verse:

"And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend

Even so, it is well with my soul!”

Other versions of the hymn include more verses, but for our sake, I will conclude with this final verse. What a glorious image! As Christians, we talk a lot about Christ’s death and resurrection and its implications in our lives. But we don’t give as much thought to the truth and impact of His return.

The first line starts, “And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight.” Could you even imagine what that would look like? The faith that we have in what we cannot see becoming visible! As Christians, we long for Christ’s return. In a world full of anguish, this is our hope. We read in Titus 2:13, “Wait for the blessed hope - the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” We must wait patiently, understanding that we will eventually gaze upon the most glorious sight our eyes can see. Our faith will finally be fulfilled! What our hope is in can finally be seen!

The imagery that is given then is “The clouds be rolled back as a scroll.” What a beautiful display of God’s glory! I could not even being to imagine what that imagery looks like. We finally get to behold what heaven looks like. Our reality on earth will be finished.

Not only do we get an image of what we will see but we see, but we will hear the most beautiful sound to accompany it. “The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend!” We’ve all heard our fair share of beautiful music in our life. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the emotions that the sound of the trump and the visual of Christ descending will invoke.

And through all of this “Even so, it is well with my soul” continues to be shouted. The lyrics in this verse are to be sung with assurance and confidence. There is a peace that comes with these depictions of the Lord’s return. Despite the brokenness of the world as we know it, the glory of God being displayed gives our soul assurance.

This is the peace that surpasses all understanding. This is where our security is found.

This verse gives the holistic view of Christian hope - Christ died, Christ rose, Christ ascended, and He’s coming back for His people.

We know that He is a good Father. We know that He is faithful.

Because of this, we can confidently proclaim, “It is well with my soul!”

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
