Thankless Work

Where Do You Seek Recognition?

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

- Philippians 2:3-5

Have you ever found yourself doing work behind the scenes, tirelessly serving in your role, yet often feeling overlooked or under-appreciated?

It’s a common experience for many leaders.

Many of us dedicate long hours to the less glamorous tasks that are crucial for our team or organization to thrive, yet rarely earn the recognition that’s deserved.

The lack of acknowledgment can lead to feeling of discouragement, burnout or even resentment. It’s natural to want validation for excellent work, and the silence can sometimes hurt. It can make work feel like an uphill battle.

Sometimes we wonder if our efforts are truly making a difference.

Are the endless hours spent doing thankless tasks really worth it?

There’s a profound truth that we often overlook - God needs your work to build His Kingdom. The very essence of Christian leadership is not about recognition, it’s about humble service. It’s about not doing the work for ourselves, it’s about emulating the life and teaching of Christ.

We see this humility of service most articulated in Philippians 2:3-7, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

In the Apostle Paul’s writing here, we see the importance of taking the form of a servant. Our calling is to serve others- not for our own sake, but for theirs! As Christian leaders, we are called to embody the very spirit of Christ in our work.

We should not expect recognition for our toil!

And that’s a difficult thing to grasp. But we are working to serve others and serve God all for His glory- not our own.

We’re encouraged in Galatians 6:9 to “not grow weary in doing good” with a promise that our perseverance will eventually reap a rich harvest. Even if you feel like no one appreciates you for the work that you do, they are seeds sown in faith.

You are doing good work for the Kingdom of God!

There is no greater calling.

But there’s a beautiful thing that we do receive through our work. We receive a reward of faithfulness that gets illustrated in Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the LORD as a reward. It is the LORD Christ you are serving.

Now that’s powerful. The ultimate recognition that we will receive for our work is not always going to come in the form of human praise. It will come in the form of acknowledgment from our LORD.

The ways that you pour into your work is ultimately for the LORD.

Yes, we serve others every day.

But that service towards others is for God’s glory!

And one day we will share in that glory.

As you navigate the complex path of Christian leadership, I find it crucial to understand the real worth of the work that we do.

It lies in your faithful service to God, not in the applause of man.

The thankless tasks you do are significant for the Kingdom! They are a part of God’s grand blueprint. You play a role in that.

I can’t think of a more purposeful calling than to be playing a role in building God’s kingdom through our work.

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

“If you make work your identity and you succeed, it’ll go to your head. If you fail, it’ll go to your heart.”

Here’s a thought-provoking tweet that I saw this morning:

Being a lifelong learner demands that you have intellectual humility. You don’t know it all! When you receive new information, you have to be willing to tell yourself that you care more about the pursuit of truth than the pursuit of being correct.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
