Rest Harder
Choosing to Rest Is Difficult, But So Worth It

Good old Texas has given us a nice winter storm the past 4 days. If you don’t know how we Texans feel about the winter, if the weather gets below freezing and there is any sort of ice on the roads, we cancel school completely. We just can’t take the cold. Northerners would laugh at us. Kids rejoice as classes and everything is cancelled, but as a coach it’s difficult.
We’re 2nd in district playing the biggest game of our season on Friday against the #1 team in our district. As a coach being stuck in the house, not practicing for 4 straight days leading up to it has without a doubt produced anxiety in me. There’s things we have to work on! We need to be playing our best basketball right now! But in the middle of one of the biggest weeks of our season, we’ve been able to find rest.
Our players have been playing extremely hard. Their legs have been tired. Their minds are fatigued. These few days off have without a doubt produced positives for them. They are able to regain clarity and focus as we prepare to play our 1st playoff game in 8 days. Their legs are able to get some much needed rest. Overall, the rest has produced much needed clarity and focus for all of us. It’s given me time to spend with my wife and time to scout future playoff opponents. There’s good things that come when you choose to rest!
Sometimes rather than grinding harder we need to rest harder. Rather than pushing more we need to rest more. What a good time to rest to get some fresh legs and fresh minds. When things are out of control, you can either choose to stress out or control what you can control. I’m choosing to rest and get ready for the final grind of this season.
