Overcoming Self-Pity
Where Do You Go In Trials?

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
Self-pity is a place many of us have visited.
It’s a place where we feel sorry for ourselves. It’s a place where pain resonates with many. It’s emotionally and spiritually draining.
The Bible doesn’t leave us helpless in this emotional state. It offers countless wisdom and guidance that can help us navigate the moment where we feel sorry for ourselves.
When we go through a season of personal sorrow, we often times have a distorted perception of God’s love and care. We think that by feeling sorry for ourselves and putting our focus on us and our situation, we can handle our adversities alone. Or even worse, we may feel like we can manipulate other people into fixing our situation for us by leveraging our self-pity.
This view not only isolates us, but it never actually fixes the problem at hand. It misuses the goodwill of those around us, and leaves us in this cycle of dependency on ourselves and others rather than going to the source of where true growth and healing is found.
Self-pity comes into play when we exclude God from our trials and focus on our own sympathy. Now this is a difficult temptation: to dwell in our sorrow rather than rely on God’s provision.
We see many narratives in the Bible that provide valuable lessons of bringing our hurts and sorrows before the throne. Take David for example. Despite his trials, he presented his afflictions to God.
We read in Psalm 62:5-6, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
Despite the many trials that David faced in his life, he know that his ultimate source of comfort and security was God. He recognized that only in God could he find true stability and rest.
We see self-pity emerge in our lives when we disregard God’s presence in our daily life and choose to focus primarily on our troubles instead of acknowledging His glory, kindness, sovereignty, and justice.
Overcoming self-pity requires recognizing this truth. It requires shifting our focus towards God’s compassion and love. Isn’t it truly remarking that the solution to nearly all of our trials here on earth is to simply turn your eyes where they should be focused in the first place?
Self-pity lacks the power to actually heal or restore any brokenness. That power is reserved for what Christ has done on the cross. Because God’s love is demonstrated through that sacrifice. That’s where our focus should be.
Trusting God’s understanding and control over our situations is crucial in fighting the battle against self-pity. We can’t do it alone. By choosing faith, we can confidently shout, “He is my rock and my salvation! I will not be shaken!”
To God be the glory.

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY
“No matter what our job is, we view it not as our purpose in life but rather as where God has sovereignty placed us for the purpose of making Christ known and His name great. If you are a teacher, if you are a politician, if you are a businessman, if you are in agriculture, if you are in construction, if you are in technology, if you are in arts, then you should not be saying, ‘I need to find my life’s purpose in this work,’ but rather, ‘I need to bring God’s purpose to this work.’”

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
