How to Handle Things Outside of Your Control

“The only real control we have is over ourselves and the choices we make. Everything else is merely an illusion.” - Robin Sharma
Life is unpredictable, and many things are beyond our control. As humans, we often like to feel in control. We like to think that we can predict and manage our lives to achieve the outcomes we want. However, the truth is, many things are outside of our control. As we strive to become elite and grow as leaders, it’s essential to recognize these factors and learn how to navigate them.
There are often times external factors that happen in our life that we can’t control. These can come in the form of job loss, economic changes, or a global pandemic. As we continue to grow and build, it’s important that we acknowledge the factors that are outside of our control. We should recognize that we can’t control these events, but we can take steps to prepare and respond accordingly. Just as a house needs a solid roof to protect it from the elements, leaders must be able to navigate through uncertain times by remaining flexible and adaptable.
Building resilience and adaptability is key. In order to withstand external factors, it’s crucial that we lay a solid foundation that’s able to stand. Through building and becoming an elite leader, we learn to grow a solid base of knowledge, skills, and experience to be resilient and adapt to the change that happens around us. By continuing to learn and being flexible, we become better equipped to handle the unexpected.
Unexpected events can occur at any time. We like to think of ourselves as invincible to life’s uncertainty. However, life continues to happen. We can’t control it. What we can control is our response to the unexpected. By setting an example of someone who is always willing to learn and grow in the face of adversity, we can inspire others to follow our lead. Great builders prepare for the unexpected by having backup plans in place and remaining calm and focused under pressure.
Handling things outside of our control requires recognizing the factors that are outside of our control, building resilience and adaptability, and leading by example. By doing so, we can become more certain in the face of adversity, by utilizing the things outside of our control as ways to grow and build.
