The Hope for Aimless Wanderers

Diving Into the Phases of Our Spiritual Journeys

We all face an illusion of satisfaction. It’s a common temptation we all face. We are cautioned by Jesus in Matthew 16:26, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” This rings true for many of us as the forefront of our pursuits are wealth and an abundant life. We desire comfort.

Our spiritual journey goes something like this:

  1. Chasing after worldly pursuits

  2. Personal struggle and reflection

  3. Divine transformation

Often, we find ourselves caught in the desire for more - more money, more friends, more status, more possessions. Yet, this desire for more his hollow. It’s worth nothing. It gives one a false, temporary pleasure. It’s fleeting. The world’s definition of success and happiness can never compare to the peace, joy, and fulfillment we can find in relationship with Christ. It’s true and lasting.

It’s only when we realize that the things of this world are fool’s gold that our hearts can truly be reoriented to the desires of God.

However, this realization often times comes after periods of spiritual struggle. We often go through periods where we are wandering in the wilderness. We’re trying to find the right path, but get led astray so often. We can’t find the rivers of life that actually quench our thirst. Without a clear understanding of our purpose, we can easily find ourselves wandering aimlessly like this.

We’re urged in Hebrews 12:1 to “lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely” and to “run with endurance the race that is set before us.” This depiction is of a clear path. It’s a clear direction with a clear focus. And for those that a spiritually struggling, it’s a breath of fresh air. For those that wander aimlessly, they finally have their map.

When we lack this spiritual direction we find ourselves in a lonely fight. We get lost in our trials. We focus only on the adversity and our loneliness in that fight. But the promise of our faith is that even in our aimlessness, God is always ready guide us back to His path.

That’s a hope worth clinging too!

The depth of this transformation comes when we acknowledge our need for God and invite Him to walk with us. It’s the prodigal son returning to his father. This admission of aimlessness brings about a profound shift that the Holy Spirit can use to mold us. We read in Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

As we surrender to God and invite His Spirit to abide in us, we experience rest. This rest quiets our anxious thoughts. The guide the spiritually aimless. We receive peace. And this peace surpasses any understanding that we have.

And this is the power of grace: that God is guiding His people towards a deeper relationship with Him and fuller understanding of His incredible love for us.

To God be the glory!

I pray that your day is full of reminders of God’s love and faithfulness. May you faithfully build your life on Christ.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
