From the Ground Up: How to Establish Trust with Your Team
How Consistency, Transparency, and Accountability Win

When building something from the ground up, building trust is one of the first things that you have to consider. Building trust and credibility as a leader is all about consistency, transparency, and accountability. When you show up for your team consistently, communicate openly and honestly, and take responsibility for your actions, you‘ll be able to establish a culture of trust that will help you build strong relationships with your team members and achieve success together.
Consistency with actions and behaviors lets your team members know what to expect from you. They are more likely to trust you when you follow through on your promises. They can trust you when they know what to expect from you. Consistency builds trust and sets the foundation for a strong relationship between you and your teammates.
Transparency is also crucial as it shows that you are open and honest. Transparency is difficult, because it’s uncomfortable. When you’re transparent, your team members know that you’re not hiding anything, and they’re more likely to trust you as a result. This also shows them that you’re not perfect, and that it’s through failure that you’re able to grow. Being transparent is an important part of building trust through open communication and feedback.
Finally, taking accountability for your actions and decisions is one of the biggest ways to build trust. This means that when things don’t go the way you planned (as they never do!) you are the one taking responsibility when things go wrong. When you hold yourself accountable, your team members know that you’re willing to take ownership for your mistakes. It creates a culture of ownership where people aren’t afraid to fail because they know that’s ultimately where the growth happens!
Great things aren’t built overnight. They are formed when everyone buys in to the build. In order for everyone to buy in to the build, there has to be trust. And that trust is developed over time when you as the leader choose to be consistent, transparent, and accountable every time.
