Experiencing Self-Doubt as a Leader

Why Understanding Our Identity Can Lead to Freedom From Self-Doubt

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a Holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” - 1 Peter 2:9

Overcoming self-doubt can be a challenge for many leaders, but it’s an essential part of effective Christian leadership. It can be difficult to recognize, but you have been placed in the position you’re in for a specific purpose to serve a specific person. Self-doubt can manifest itself as negative thoughts or beliefs. We all have moments where we feel inadequate or incompetent. As humans, we experience self-doubt due to our desire for appearing competent and achieving mastery in something. When we fall short of those self-imposed expectations, it hurts our internal worth.

It’s crucial to realize where our identity is actually rooted. As a Christian leader, your worth and identity come from your relationship with Christ, not from your performance or accomplishments. Keep this truth at the forefront of your mind and find your confidence and security in Him.

Through that truthful understanding, we can then surround ourselves with supportive people. Seek out mentors or friends who can offer you guidance and support. We are called to be in a community of others that encourage and build us up. In times where you experience self-doubt, this community that God has placed you in can be crucial as they also can speak truth into you!

Lastly, it’s crucial that despite your doubts, you need to take action. Don’t let self-doubt paralyze you from taking action. Recognize and trust that by taking small steps towards whatever it is that you want to accomplish, God will equip and guide you according to His perfect will.

Finding identity and strength in Christ is crucial to solving self-doubt. We can’t solve it ourselves. It’s all about going back to the root of the solution to all of our problems- our nature. Hold this as a source of encouragement and motivation throughout your day as you continue to lead with confidence and purpose according to His will.
