Every Job Matters

How We Embrace Our Work as Christians

“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

- James 2:17

The work you do matters.

As Christians in today’s fast-paced world, we find ourselves tempted to compartmentalize our lives. We separate our work from our faith. We view our work as merely a means to earn a paycheck. We do it just to get by. This is increasingly difficult if you don’t work primarily in a job in ministry.

Every Christian has a calling in life. This calling is not just about the work that you do to earn a paycheck. Your calling extends to all aspects of your life. It’s an opportunity to extend God’s love and to serve others.

It includes our responsibilities as workers, family members, and friends. It’s the glamorous and the humble work. It’s the work that’s in the public eye and the behind the scenes work.

Whether you’re a teacher educating the future, a mechanic fixing cars, a parent raising children, or a volunteer supporting others in your community, all of us have a unique calling that we play out in this world.

This work is not to be done in vain. It is to be done from a lense of love and service to others.

When we understand this concept that our work is not primarily for personal gain, we can better serve those around us.

Someone someone else needs your work.

There is no secular vs. sacred divide when it comes to the kingdom-building work that we do. All work that is honest and done in faith to the glory of God is sacred work. It holds a meaningful purpose - to serve others and bring glory to God’s name.

This work that we do is our response to God’s calling. It’s a way that we participate in His redemptive work in the world. It gives the life that we live purpose.

Ultimately, our work is how we live out our faith! The jobs that we engage in every day are avenues for putting our faith into action! We see the importance of this found in James 2:17, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead.” There’s more context to this verse that I’ll dive into in the future, but I think the truth that it speaks is crucial for us to understand. Our work provides opportunities to love and serve our neighbors. Our faith should inform the way we approach work. It’s how we live out our faith!

It’s not just a means to an end.

It’s not just a source of income.

It’s an opportunity to honor God and serve our neighbors.

What a great purpose we have to wake up every day! Every day is a day to wake up and build His kingdom!

Thanks be to God!

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

“If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weal. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

- C.S. Lewis

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
