Embracing Failure in Christ

How to Turn Weakness and Setbacks into Spiritual Growth

“But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ's power may rest on me." - 2 Corinthians 12:9

"Failure leads to growth."

Many of us have heard this before. The truth for us is that failure can be a stepping stone to our spiritual growth. It can be difficult to imagine any good coming out of our mistakes, but in our faith, we are taught to view things from a different perspective. The Bible reminds us time and again that in every circumstance, including our failures, there's an opportunity to grow, to experience God's grace, and to witness His redeeming power.

The book of James speaks clearly on how trials, including our failures, lead to spiritual maturity (James 1:2-4). The challenges we encounter test our faith, and it is this testing that leads to perseverance. When we persevere and stand firm in our faith despite adversities, we become more like Christ. Instead of running away from failure, we must embrace it as a vital part of our spiritual journey.

Our failures also reveal our natural weaknesses. This is not cause for heartache or despair. The Apostle Paul provides us with a comforting and empowering truth: in our weakness, God's power is made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9).

I love this verse. It's a verse that I meditate on daily.

In MY weakness, Christ's power is made perfect. Human weakness and failure provides the ideal opportunity for the display of His power. This is a far better solution than simply removing our weakness and failure. Christ's power is shown! His glory is made known through our failures!

The more we acknowledge our failures, the more God's grace becomes evident in our lives.

We need not hide or shy away from our weaknesses. Instead, we should embrace them, knowing that they provide opportunities for God's strength to shine through. This is the beauty of our faith - in our weakness, we find God's strength.

The most remarkable aspect of embracing failure comes from understanding God's ability to redeem all things. It's His nature. It's who He is.

The Bible assures us that God can use everything, including our failures, for good (Romans 8:28). This doesn't mean that everything that happens is good, but it does mean that God can turn even our greatest failures into something that serves His purpose. Not our own purpose - His purpose. It's in our failures that we have the most difficult time recognizing this.

Embracing failure is then an act of faith, a decision to trust that God can take what is broken and use it for His glory.

It's all about His glory being shown at the end of the day. If His glory can be magnified and shown more beautifully through my failures, then bring it on.

Keep making mistakes. Keep striving for excellence for His glory. Understand that you will constantly come up short while striving for excellence.

At the end of the day we follow a Savior who turned the greatest failure - the cross - into the greatest victory, the resurrection. Let us embrace failure, not as the end of our journey, but as a vital part of our journey towards growing in relationship Christ and letting His name be known throughout the world.
