The Competitive Edge

Why a Healthy Competitive Mindset Wins

“Competition is the spice of sports; but if you make spice the whole meal you’ll be sick.” - George Leonard

Being competitive is an important trait that can help you achieve success in various aspects of life. Whether it's in sports, business, or personal goals, having a competitive mindset can give you an edge and help you come out on top.

Having a competitive mindset helps you stay motivated and focused. When you have a competitive spirit, you are always striving to be better than your opponents. This means you are constantly pushing yourself to improve and achieve your goals. The drive to win can help you stay committed to your tasks, even when they get difficult or tedious. It can also help you maintain a positive attitude and overcome obstacles that may stand in your way.

Being competitive can also help you build resilience and mental toughness. In competitive situations, you may face setbacks or failures, but by staying competitive, you can bounce back and continue to pursue your goals. This resilience can be invaluable in many areas of life, such as business or personal relationships, where setbacks and challenges are common.

I’ve also found that being competitive can help you develop a strong sense of self-discipline. To be competitive, you need to be disciplined and committed to your vision. This means setting clear objectives, creating a plan to achieve them, and staying focused on your priorities. By developing this self-discipline, you can become more productive and efficient in all areas of life.

It’s crucial that you stay process-oriented even if you’re extremely competitive. While a competitive mindset can be helpful in driving one’s performance, it’s important not to become so focused on winning that you lose sight on the process. I call the process “BUILD”. You can’t be so focused on winning that you forget to build. A build-oriented approach to winning means focusing on the steps required to achieve your goals, rather than just the outcome on winning. By staying build-oriented, you can develop valuable skills, build resilience, and stay motivated, all while pursuing your goals. However, it’s important to understand that setbacks and failures are a part of the process of becoming an elite competitor. Don’t let failures stop you from continuing to build.

Being competitive is an important trait that can help you achieve success in many areas of life. It can help you stay motivated, resilience, develop self-discipline, and build strong relationships. Whether you're an athlete, a business professional, or simply striving to achieve personal goals, being competitive can give you an edge and help you compete at a high level
