Why The Only Person You Should Compare Yourself To Is Who You Were Yesterday

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” - Theodore Roosevelt
Comparison comes natural to so many of us today. With the prevalence of social media, it can be super easy to want to compare yourself or your situation with someone else’s. On one hand, comparison can motivate us to work harder and achieve our goals. But for a lot of us, comparison can reveal some deep-rooted insecurities which can lead to feelings of inadequacy.
When we compare ourselves to others, it can reveal some of our deepest insecurities. We are all insecure about something. Even the people that you look up to have something that they’re insecure about. We may feel envious of someone else’s success, beauty, or talent, and this can make us feel inadequate about who we are. We may also feel pressure to conform to expectations placed on us by society or someone we love, even if they don’t align with our values or goals in life.
However, it’s important to remember that you are uniquely created. You are the only version of you. No one else has your exact blend of talent and experiences. You bring you unique perspectives to any situation that only you can bring. The difficult thing for us to focus on then is not comparing ourselves to others, but to focus on our own strengths and find ways to grow them.
By focusing on your own strengths, you can work on improving yourself, rather than constantly comparing yourself to others. This also helps you develop a greater sense of self-awareness and confidence in yourself and your abilities.
The only comparison you need to make is with who you were yesterday. By setting goals for yourself and working to improve every day, you can measure your progress and growth over time. This allows you to focus on your own build rather than comparing what you’re building to what someone else is building. Did you adequately build what you needed to today? Don’t let what someone else is building distract from the awesome ways that you’re building today. Don’t let someone else stop you from laying the best brick you can lay today.
Reflection Question: What makes you unique compared to everyone else? How can you focus on those strengths to build something great every day?
