The Christian Response to Burnout

Why Burnout is Not a Badge of Honor- It's a Warning Sign

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30

Burnout is not a badge of honor.

There is a rise of burnout in our fast-paced world. Being busy and overworked has been viewed by many as an honor that they are dedicated and resilient. The normalization of this not only encourages an unhealthy lifestyle, but it is unsustainable.

This “hustle culture” mindset eventually will take a severe toll on our overall well-being, impacting our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Eventually, work becomes more about proving your worth through your results. It becomes about displaying your productivity to others.

By going along this path, we run the risk of losing sight of where our true worth is found.

When we understand burnout from a Christian perspective, recognize our self-worth rooted in God, and appreciate the importance of rest, our lives can be transformed into a healthy, balanced life.

At the heart of what it means to be a follower of God is the invitation from Jesus to those who are wearied and burdened to seek rest in Him (Matthew 11:28-30). Our lives are not intended to be solely defined by work and stress. They should be balanced by being filled up physically, emotionally, and spiritually. For Christians, burnout isn't a badge of honor but an urgent call for us to refocus and realign ourselves with God's intended plan for our lives.

In a society where productivity is often equated with self-worth, it's critical to reiterate that our value isn't rooted in worldly achievements or ceaseless work.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Our worth originates from being created in God's image and His unconditional love for us. So many of us lose sight of this truth! Our worth is found in being created in His image! Glorifying burnout and being overworked as a symbol of commitment and dedication misrepresents our true identity in Christ and His love for us.

The Bible talks about the importance of rest time and time again. The commandment in Exodus 20:8-10 emphasizes observing the Sabbath day. The Sabbath is a practice that acknowledges our dependence on God and our need to be filled up.

This isn’t just about going to church on Sundays. It’s about continuous recognition that we are reliant on God to fill us up. This rhythm of work and rest is a blueprint designed by our Creator! Ignoring the value of rest pushes us towards burnout.

I like to use the illustration of a glass being empty. Have you ever tried to pour a drink from an empty glass? It’s impossible. Similarly in our lives, when we constantly pour out our energy, time, and resources without taking the time to refill, we reach burnout and exhaustion.

If we constantly pour ourselves into our work, obligations, and commitment without pausing to refill, we’ll find ourselves with nothing left to give. This is what burnout is- an empty glass.

We are called to be vessels overflowing with God’s love and grace. To accomplish this mission daily, we must be regularly “refilled” through rest and prayer. As we are replenished, we become capable of overflowing into the lives of those around us. Burnout then becomes not a badge of honor, but a warning sign that we’ve neglected an essential need.

I could talk about rest for hours. Maybe more on that in a future post.

Burnout is an indication that we need to reorient our lives towards God's plan for balance and restoration. As Christians, we are called to find our worth in God's love and to do our work by pouring over into the lives of those around us for His glory.
