A Christian Reflection on Memorial Day
The Importance of Freedom for the Christian

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
There is a great irony on a day like Memorial Day as we pay our respects to the brave individuals who fought for our nation's freedom. Today, we celebrate our earthly freedoms, yet as many go throughout their day to day they can’t help but feel far from free.
Given the current state of our world, we can't help but wonder about the silent battles many of us fight within ourselves. We celebrate our external freedoms, yet internally many of us feel far from free.
Today, we celebrate our earthly freedoms that we have. Thanks be to God for those men and women who have faithfully served!
But there is a different freedom that our world needs to know about. There is a freedom that extends beyond the freedoms that we get to experience in our country. There is a freedom that not only frees us from the chains of guilt and fear that we might feel. It’s a freedom that transforms us and guides us towards a life of peace, love, and purpose.
This freedom is found in Galatians 5:1, where the Apostle Paul writes, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Let us consider this spiritual freedom that Paul references. While we enjoy many liberties in our nation thanks to the courage and sacrifice of countless individuals, the freedom that Christ gives us goes beyond all earthly freedoms. It's a freedom from the bondage of sin, from guilt, and from shame. It is a freedom that no man can fight for except the Son of God.
Through His death and resurrection, Christ offers us a freedom that not only redeems us but also redefines us. As we remember those who fought for our nation’s freedoms, we also must cherish the spiritual freedom that Christ freely gives. This freedom leads to eternal life and liberty from sin.
It’s crucial to understand that this spiritual freedom doesn't come without responsibility on our end. The freedom that Christ provides us isn't a free pass to live selfishly or harmfully. Quite the opposite!
It comes with a significant responsibility. It's a freedom to live righteously. It’s a freedom that allows us to choose love over hate, peace over violence, and truth over lies.
Paul continues to write about this freedom found in Christ in Galatians 5:13. Here he instructs that we are to use our freedom to "serve one another in love". What a message our world needs!
On this Memorial Day, as we reflect on those who have responsibly served with their freedom, risking and sometimes losing their lives for the cause of peace and justice at home, let us also strive to use our spiritual freedom to serve others and glorify God.
Maintaining this freedom requires constant vigilance. Paul's words in Galatians 5:1 tell us to "stand firm" and not let ourselves be "burdened again by a yoke of slavery". This means continuous prayer, studying God's Word, and resisting the temptations that could lead us back into spiritual slavery.
Because we’re free, we love.
Because we’re free, we serve.
Because we’re free, we strive for justice.
Today, let us remember and honor the brave men and women who have fought for our earthly freedoms. But let us also raise our eyes higher to the One who fought the ultimate battle for our spiritual freedom.
In doing so, we recognize that our earthly freedoms are significant, but our spiritual freedom in Christ is eternal.
This is the higher freedom that we celebrate every day, the freedom for which Christ set us free.
If you are someone that has served our country to give us the freedoms that we have, I graciously thank you. Your sacrifice has allowed us to have the liberty to boldly profess the name of Jesus. It is on the strength of your sacrifice that we are able to share of a higher freedom.
Thank you.
To God be the glory.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
