Celebrating the Role of Fathers

Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! Sharpen those BBQ tools. Dust off those dad jokes. Crack open your best dad joke. It’s an amazing day to celebrate the men who have helped us navigate through life’s winding paths. Today, let us celebrate Father’s Day by reflecting on the strength, wisdom, and love that fathers around the world share.

As Christians, we see a clear understanding of the role of fatherhood. The father plays a significant role in shaping a child’s path. We read in Proverbs 22:6, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

We learn ultimately about the impacts of fatherhood from our Heavenly Father. In Psalam 103:13 we read, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” We see a nurturing and compassionate nature of our Heavenly Father that our earthly fathers are to emulate.

Fathers also hold a crucial role in shaping our spiritual lives. Christian fathers hold the responsibility of offering spiritual guidance to their families by setting an example of love and service. They are to mirror the loving nature of God. In Ephesians 6:4 we read, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” On Father’s Day, I find it appropriate that we appreciate the role of these kind of fathers everywhere. They hold a duty that weighs a lot. Thank God for these faithful family leaders!

Honoring our fathers today can take many forms. It can be as simple as expressing gratitude and love in a letter or as thoughtful as organizing a day filled with their activities. Ultimately, we need to pray for our fathers. We need to offer love and respect to them every day. We need to urge them to continue to faithfully fulfill their duty.

Father’s Day isn’t just about our earthly fathers. It’s a day to honor and give thanks to our Heavenly Father who ultimately embodies these traits. Every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer we pray to “Our Father in heaven.” Let us lift our voices in gratitude to our Heavenly Father for His unfailing love on this day.

I’m not a dad, but I know the love of my Heavenly Father is something that I want to live out to my family the day that I become a dad. Dads play a wonderful role in this life. As we celebrate our earthly fathers who guide us and our Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally, may we continue to lift all of the father figures in our life up in prayer. Thank God for fathers!

To God be the glory!

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
